This is one of the best feature Intuit had added this feature in Quickbooks desktop back in 2009. Its a great feature when it comes to Quickbooks disaster management as this feature automatically creates and keeps a backup copy.
The Quickbooks .ADR (auto data recovery) feature was introduces with Quickbooks 2010 R12P and ever since then it has helped a lot of business owners during the time of accounting data crisis. All three version Pro, Premier & Enterpeise are equiped with this feature however this dose not work with Quickbooks Accountant. Also there is a limitation of size. If the backup file is more than 1.5GB then Quickbooks will not create the .adr file.
Quickbooks automatically creates a folder called “QuickBooks Auto Data Recovery” in the same folder where the company file is located.

How to use .adr file to recover my quickbooks data?
using windows explorer navigate and open the Quickbooks company file folder ( if unsure one may check by pressing F2 while the file is open)

Once the company file folder is open you will find a folder called QuickbooksAutoDataRecovery and that’s where the auto backup file gets saved. Within the QuickbooksAutoDataRecovery as a backup there 2 different kinds of file, .ADR and .TLG.ADR,
Lets learn how to recover Quickbooks file
Do not modify these file. Make a new folder on desktop as “qb repair test” and create a copy of those two file from the original location.
Now rename the .adr file by removing .adr after the file name so that is ends with .qbw

After renaming the file open it with Quickbooks software and run a verify by navigating to File – Utilities – Verify Data.
If the file is clean or good then rename the damaged file at the original location and move the good files from “qb repair test” folder to the original location of the company file.
Mission accomplished ! Happy bookkeeping
